Math:
This week we introduced adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Pretty simple concept... kids really only struggled when the numbers were embedded in a word problem and they had to determine the operation based on context. We took a test today, Friday, to celebrate all the great learning that we have done with fractions these last few weeks.
Some students also created some puzzles and games to practice generating equivalent fractions. Children played these games during ROAR time and I provided some challenging puzzles to reinforce comparing fractions and using good number sense.
Next week, we start transitioning to our multiplication and division unit. I might come up with a fun project to wrap of fractions before the official switch to our new unit. I will have to do some planning over the weekend.
Science:
This week was all about light and sound energy. These are two types of energy that kiddos investigated a lot in third grade, so we spent more time reading about them than investigating. Students compared the similarities and differences between these two types of energy. We did a short investigation on sound to reinforce that sound is motion.
Next week, we investigate electrical energy by building circuits.
Last but not least, next week is Red Ribbon Week. Here is information from our school counselor, Ms. Boyd:
Next week our nation celebrates the benefits of living a safe, healthy, drug-free lifestyle! This year we will wear red rubber bracelets as a pledge to stay drug-free and to help ourselves achieve our hopes and dreams and accomplish our goals! Wear your rubber bracelet every day this week!
