Week 5

9/26/2014

First of all, with October 13 fast approaching I have set up a conference sign up page. This signup is for MY HOMEROOM only. Miss Murphy will have her own conference signup for her homeroom. Please got to this site and sign up at your earliest convenience.

Next, if you have any "single socks" or old socks lying around, send them my way. We need them to use as erasers for the small white boards children use in class. All I ask is they are clean :)

Okay, let's talk about all the learning we did this week.

Math

They were busy bees in math this week reviewing adding and subtracting with regrouping, Adding was no problem, but subtracting with regrouping was another story.... we will have to continue practice through next week. I am glad that I didn't end up sending that homework home. I'm sure it would have been overwhelming. We also practiced comparing and ordering decimals. The kids took a pop quiz today and it looks like they all did quite well. I spent a lot of time in small groups this week working with kids and helping them find their errors on their own. It is a fascinating process. The hardest part is getting them to do it on their own without prompting. We'll get there. You can support this at home too. On homework you might say, "I see 4 mistakes, can you find them?" That critical analysis is crucial in 4th grade.

Next week we add and subtract numbers with decimals and introduce fractions.

Science

This was a fun week in Science. In our investigation, "A Matter of Stuff and Space," students measured the mass and volume of several objects. I also did a pretty cool density demonstration with a regular soda and diet soda. Ask your kiddo what they remember about that lesson.

Next week we explore how energy changes matter.

Homework went really well this week. Xtramath is rolling steady now. I love sharing the progress reports with the kids. It's amazing how much they improve in just 1 week. Thank you for your patience and support with that program. I know it is new, but I believe that it is worthwhile.

Enjoy your weekend! I will be grading lots and lots of math and science, but am looking forward to some downtime with the hubby.

Cheers,

Raven Reaves
