Hi guys,
First, an important announcement. The reading and math benchmarks originally scheduled for next week have been delayed. The district will not release the tests until 2/17, so benchmark scores will not be ready until the week of 2/23.
We will be testing 2/18 - 2/20.
As a result, I can provide you with an incomplete portfolio at our conference meeting 2/16 or I can send them home with your child the week of 2/23 with all of the benchmark data.
Also, next Friday we celebrate Valentine's day on Friday the 13th! The party is scheduled from 2:00-2:45pm. It is laid back: ice cream floats and a Valentine exchange. I will be out that day to attend a wedding, so Mrs. Sisk will be my substitute.
Math
This week I introduced three different graphs and charts: frequency chart, stem and leaf plot, and a dot plot. It was really just an introduction, since this week we tested both Thursday and Friday. Student's have begun working on some STAAR prep called Countdown to STAAR. It is a mixed practice that both reviews old skills and previews new ones. We will continue working on this STAAR prep until the STAAR test in April 21.
Next week we will continue practicing graphs and will review important vocabulary from the Personal Financal Literacy unit students completed online on Everfi.com
Science
This week was all about science! The perfect antidote to benchmarks! We have begun our Astronomy Unit with several different stations that the kids rotated through. They learned moon phases on an online simulation, there was also a pocket solar system that described the size of our solar system on a 1 meter scale. There was a super cool activity on shadows with a flashlight, a legoman, and an upside down bowl :) (ask your kids about what they learned!) They are writing Valentines to describe the complicated relationships between the moon, Earth, and the sun (I am sneaking in a little creative writing too!), and finally they are reading and taking notes on tides. We will continue with these next week and I will introduce the reason for Seasons.
Have a beautiful weekend!
