Hi all,
Well, if anyone was up at the school Friday, you might know why my update didn't get out on time! I needed the whole weekend to recover! Rain, tornado warnings, no specials, no outdoor recess.... it was bananas! Here is your belated update:
Math:
Monday - Wednesday we finished up our multiplication unit and took the test Wednesday. I will have those graded and returned by this Wednesday along with several daily assignments that were part of our multiplication practice. Please don't seem alarmed if much of it is incomplete. Once I introduced all the methods of multiplication to students, they were encouraged to practice the method they needed the most help on. That may mean that they skipped around from assignment to assignment once they felt confident.
Thursday I introduced division. We reviewed the basics: vocabulary, partitioning, etc. Then I introduced remainders. Kids practiced this skill with a game called Loose Caboose. Ask about it! Friday... no math was accomplished.
In Week 11, we will continue with division.
Science:
This week we discussed the force, magnetism, and introduced electrical energy. Students participated in magnet activities to research more about the polarity, magnetic fields and both naturally occurring and man made magnets. Then on Wednesday I introduced electrical energy. We created a human circuit using something called "energy balls". Ask your kiddo about that activity. They had a blast. Then kids were given materials to create a simple circuit and just explored making it work.
In week 11, we will continue with electricity.
Health:
Students worked on completing a model of the skeleton and on Friday we watched a video about bones in the skeletal system with a special emphasis on joints. We will follow up on this lesson with a quiz on identifying bones and joint types as well as safety in the near future.
Homeroom:
Today we start a candy collection for Treats for Troops. Students are encouraged to bring in all the extra Halloween candy to class throughout the week. We will submit our collection on Friday to Student Council. They will weigh each classes' donation and whoever brought in the most gets a pizza party! Woohoo!
Also, on Halloween I shared my favorite "spooky tale" The Raven by Poe. We read it and acted it out and figured out what it was saying and even wrote our own version on the story. It was great fun! We also combined with Mrs. Dawson's class to listen to a recording of Glenn Close reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It is a wonderful audio book and the kids really enjoyed figuring out the plot and solving the mystery.
Thanks for all that you do to support your kids every day in school! It's already November and this week will be the last "normal" week we will see for a while. Attendance matters, so please keep that in mind as you schedule things for the holidays.
